Maker FAQ
What is a mySkillit Maker?
A Maker is a person with expertise in a skill who wants to share their talent, skill and enthusiasm with others by offering an educational and entertaining, live experience (Skillits).
Who can become a Maker?
Anyone 18 years of age or over can become a Maker with Skillit, provided that they have the required knowledge and expertise, are engaged and passionate, and show trust and respect for others. You must pass a Skillit background check, and may be required to have specific credentials or licenses for your particular Skillit.
How do I get started as a Maker?
Create an account on myskillit.com at Become a Maker. Once you sign up, we will send you a link to verify your email and you can start building your profile by submitting your bio, certifications, qualifications and your best photo. Once you submit your profile for our review, a mySkillit team member will get back to you with any feedback via email.
Every proposed Skillit experience is reviewed to ensure it meets our quality standards. When describing your proposed Skillit, make sure that it is compelling and memorable, that you use quality pictures and video, that your titles and descriptions are clear, there is a list of any supplies they need on hand, and that a full list of details is provided to help the Learner understand what they are buying.
How do I create a great listing?
- Make sure the Skillit you are offering is compelling and memorable
- Use quality pictures and video
- Write clear titles and descriptions
- Be sure to include a full list of details to help the customer understand what they are buying
How long does approval take and how will I be notified?
The mySkillit team will review your submission as soon as possible and let you know if you have been approved within 3 business days. If approved, it may take us an additional 3-5 business days to launch your product on the live site. If your Skillit does not pass our review, we will provide you with feedback, and you may submit a revised proposal or a new idea.
What type of Skillit should I offer?
That is up to you as the Maker, but we recommend that you offer a Skillit that is family oriented (considers Adults and Childrens of various ages), fun, useful to the Learner, that you are qualified to teach, and that you are passionate about teaching or hosting. You can review the Skillits already on offer for ideas and brainstorm with current clients, friends and relatives.
How are we pricing Skillits?
Skillit’s prices are for Adults and Children. The prices are determined by the type of class, materials required and venue. The final price includes a 10% payment processing fee, local applicable taxes and a flat 10% booking fee.
Does mySkillit charge Makers a fee?
There is no charge to become a Maker. There is a 4% standard transaction fee to be paid directly to Stripe (our payment services provider) by the Learner at the time of purchase. mySkillit receives a 25% commission on the cost of the Skillit. mySkillit does not charge Makers a service fee or commission for donated Skillits, or if the Skillit is offered in the context of a SkillitForward arrangement with your employer.
What is the time commitment to be a Maker?
The time commitment is predetermined between you and mySkillit. You can make Skillit your full-time or part-time job, building it around other commitments as you wish.
How can I market my Skillit?
We will do that for you. mySkillit has a robust marketing budget to showcase our Makers and market them and their Skillits to the world. We encourage you to share your Skillits on all of your social media accounts and also to your network. We’ve provided shareable links on each Skillit you create, and your own Maker profile. mySkillit equips all Makers with a marketing toolkit on how to creatively promote their Skillits.
Where would I find tips for teaching Skillits?
On our blog. Please check our blogs regularly for tips, information and news.
Where should I offer my Skillit?
For in-person Skillits, you have a wide variety of possible venues, including: your home or place of business, the Learner’s home or place of business, a co-working space, a library meeting room, a coffee shop, community center or classroom. It must be a place that you are legally entitled to be and to conduct a Skillit, and one in which you will not be interrupted.
What happens if I have to cancel my Skillit?
You can cancel your Skillit prior to 72 hours in advance except in the event of a severe illness or incapacitating injury of the Maker or their immediate family member. In the event of cancellation, Maker is required to use all reasonable efforts to notify the Client as soon as practically possible and to mitigate the impact of such cancellation. If you cancel or otherwise do not fulfill your Skillit, you will not be eligible for payment for that Skillit, and must return to Skillit any funds paid to you in advance for that Skillit. Refunds to Learners will be made by Skilllit in accordance with the Terms and Conditions.
What happens if a Learner cancels a booked Skillit?
Learners are required to notify the Company in writing of a cancellation request of any pre-booked Skillit, at least forty-eight (48) hours prior to the scheduled date of the Skillit. If a Learner cancels prior to 48 hours in advance, all booking fees are non-refundable and Learner will be afforded the option of either a refund of the total purchase price of the Skillit, less the booking fee, or a credit for a future Skillit. If a Learner fails to cancel a booked Skillit prior to 48 hours in advance, they will not be eligible for any refund or credit and the maker will be fully compensated for the Skillit.
How do I communicate with Learners that have signed up for my Skillit?
You can communicate with Learners through the messaging system on your Maker Dashboard, where you will also find details of Learners attending your Skillit and payments made.
What are my obligations as a Maker to Skillit?
Your obligations are detailed in the Terms and Conditions, so please read these carefully. In particular, please note that any Skillit reservations made outside of the mySkillit platform violate our Terms and Condition, and may result in the deactivation of Maker and/or Learner accounts.
Do I need a business license?
As a general requirement, if you are not qualified to teach a Skillit, you should not be doing so. No licenses are required unless your Skillit activity is governed by a professional organization requiring a license (e.g. law or medicine).
When and how will I receive payment for my Skillit session?
You will receive payment once the Skillit has been completed. You must let Skillit know within one day after the session if there were any issues. Skillit will release your payment 5-7 business days after you host an experience, provided that there were no issues. The date that you will actually receive the funds depends on your financial institution’s processes and whether there are weekends or bank holidays intervening. You will need to set up your preferred payment method and financial information on your mySkillit Maker profile.
What do I do if I have a complaint about a Learner?
Your safety and well-being is our top priority. If, for any reason, you feel unsafe or uncomfortable during a Skillit, we advise you to politely remove yourself from the situation and contact our team (info@myskillit.com) as soon as possible. If the Skillit is in-person and you feel physically at risk, please contact local authorities first, and mySkillit second. If your complaint is of a less urgent nature, please contact us at info@myskillit.com.
What if there is an issue during the Skillit?
If either the Maker or Learner experiences an issue during the Skillit that feels unsafe, we recommend that you stop the Skillit immediately and report the issue to Skillit and let us know how we can give any more assistance. To report the issue, please contact us at info@myskillit.com, or through the Help Desk Chat.
How are refunds provided if the Skillit is canceled?
Refunds are automatically made to Learners through Skillit’s payment system if a Skillit is canceled.
Do Makers need to pay taxes on Skillits?
Makers are responsible for complying with all applicable tax laws and remitting any taxes payable to the government. In general, sales taxes applicable to the sale of services apply to the sale of Skillits. However, we suggest that you contact a tax professional to determine what taxes you are responsible for paying. Skillit does not offer tax advice and cannot be held responsible for a Maker’s tax obligations and liabilities. Please see our Terms and Conditions for further information.
